What is Marble?

Marble is significantly softer than granite, making carving and etching much easier. For this reason, marble is often used as a decorative element or to create pillars, fountains or sculptures. Sometimes patterns are cut into the stone. Due to its softness and its highly reactive nature to acids, marble is not recommended for kitchen countertops. Marble can be used for flooring, vanities, sinks and fireplace surrounds.

Used throughout history in architecture, sculptures, and building materials, marble is a sedimentary rock that has been buried deep beneath the surface of the earth. When heat and pressure are applied over millions of years the finished product is marble. Rating a 3 on the Mohs hardness scale, marble is softer than granite or quartzite and will need to be sealed often to help reduce the chances of staining or etching. Although more maintenance is typically required to keep marble looking its best, it is a beautiful material and can be used for many applications.
